By Emily Greenwood

Afro-Greeks examines the reception of Classics within the English-speaking Caribbean, from approximately 1920 to the start of the twenty first century. Emily Greenwood makes a speciality of the ways that Greco-Roman antiquity has been placed to inventive use in Anglophone Caribbean literature, and relates this nearby classical culture to the tutorial context, in particular the best way Classics used to be taught within the colonial institution curriculum. Discussions of Caribbean literature
tend to imagine an hostile dating among Classics, that's taken care of as a legacy of empire, and Caribbean literature. whereas acknowledging the significance of this imperial context, Greenwood argues that Caribbean appropriations of Classics performed a tremendous function in formulating original,
anti-colonial and anti-imperial feedback in Anglophone Caribbean fiction. Afro-Greeks finds how, within the 20th century, generations of Caribbean writers, together with Kamau Brathwaite, Austin Clarke, John Figueroa, C. L. R. James, V. S. Naipaul, Derek Walcott and Eric Williams, created a particular, local counter-tradition of analyzing Greco-Roman Classics.
